Several years ago my wife got me the practice tool kit from Van's Aircraft. However, I wasn't able to put it together until I got some basic metal working tools; dimpler, rivet squeezer, pneumatic rivet gun, etc.
The kit is a pretty good introduction to some of the basic skills that will be required for the airplane build. I'm not sure though that completing the toolbox kit would make me comfortable enough to start cutting, drilling, riveting on airplane parts. Fortunately, I have a friend who has built a couple of RV's (8 and 10), and will probably rely on him a bit for some OJT:)
